In Scrum, there is a way of formally articulating the nature of the commitment for any work that is consider complete, and thus part of the “Increment.” Thus a Definition of Done (DoD) is an agreement for a team or teams that sets a standard for achieving a “Done” user story, in conjunction with user-story-specific Acceptance Criteria. It is common for a DoD to address conditions that need to be universally true for the product in question. For example, the “-ilities” (maintainability, scalability, security, usability) are areas that are often addressed in a DoD. As stated in the Scrum Guide, it is important to “have a shared understanding of what it means for work to be complete, to ensure transparency.”
